Häufig wenn ich eine alte Cardinal kaufe, muss ich mich ärgern wenn eine falsche Spule drauf ist. Natürlich spielt es für den normalen Angler keine Rolle, die Rolle muss ja nur funktionieren! Und leider kann man die Spulen, in den meisten Fällen, einfach untereinander tauschen. Aber ein Sammler möchte natürlich, immer gerne die richtige Spule auf seiner Rolle haben. Daher versuche ich jetzt mal, für die beiden großen Serien etwas Licht ins Dunkel zu bekommen! Ich verwende allerdings nur Fotos, von den 66er bzw. 6er Cardinal Modellen. Die gleich Spezifikationen, treffen auch auf die große Baureihe zu, bis auf natürlich die anderen Gussnr. und die Größe!

Natürlich gibt es noch Zwischen und Unterversionen, der Spulen aber auf die möchte, ich jetzt nicht näher eingehen.

Quite often, when I purchase a vintage Cardinal reel, I find myself frustrated to discover that it is fitted with the wrong spool. Of course, for the average angler, this makes no difference after all, the reel simply needs to function! And unfortunately, in most cases, these spools are indeed interchangeable. However, a collector naturally always wants to have the correct spool on their reel. Therefore, I am going to attempt to shed some light on this subject regarding the two major Cardinal series! For this purpose, I will be using photos exclusively from the Cardinal 66 and 6 models. The same specifications, however, also apply to the larger series, with the obvious exception of the different casting numbers and the large!

Of course, there are also intermediate and sub-versions of the spools, but I do not wish to go into further detail about them at this time.

Version 1 mit schmalem Drücker, gefertigt von ca.1965-1968. Man erkennt sie sehr leicht an dem etwas flacheren Klemmring.

Version 1, featuring a narrow push button, manufactured from approximately 1965 to 1968. It is very easily identified by its slightly flatter clamping ring.

Durch die Form der vorderen Kante, kann man mit dieser Spulen Version, am weitesten Werfen. Aber die Schnur springt auch am schnellsten ab, wenn die Spule zu voll ist.

Thanks to the shape of the front rim, this version of the spool allows for the longest casting distances. However, the line also peels off the fastest if the spool is overfilled.

An der Rückseite erkennt man das die Kokille, noch etwas aufwendiger gearbeitet war, als bei den späteren Versionen.

On the reverse side, one can see that the mold was crafted with even greater intricacy than in the later versions.

Version 2 mit schmalem Drücker, gefertigt von ca.1968-1973. Erkennt man an dem gewölbtem Klemmring.

In der Seitenansicht gibt es fast keine Unterschiede, allerdings ist die vordere Kante jetzt scharfkantiger, damit die Schnur nicht mehr so leicht abspringt.

From the side view, there are almost no differences, however, the front edge is now sharper to prevent the line from slipping off so easily.

Hier fällt auf, es ist zwar noch die selbe Gussnr. aber auch hier wurde die Kokille geändert.

It is noteworthy here that, although the casting number remains the same, the mold has been modified in this instance as well.

Version 3 mit schmalem Drücker, gefertigt von ca.1973-1976. zur Version 2 kein nennenswerter Unterschied.

Version 3, featuring a narrow push-button, manufactured from approximately 1973 to 1976. There is no significant difference compared to Version 2.

Auch in der Seitenansicht, so gut wie keine Unterschiede zur Version 2.

Even in the side view, there are virtually no differences compared to Version 2.

Von hinten sieht man, es wurde jetzt, eine neue Kokille verwendet, natürlich mit einer neuen Gussnr.

From the rear, it is evident that a new mold was used, naturally with a new casting number.

Version 4 mit breitem Drücker, gefertigt von ca.1976-1977. zur Version 3 kein nennenswerter Unterschied, ausser der breite Drücker.

Version 4, featuring a wide pusher; manufactured circa 1976–1977. There is no significant difference compared to Version 3, other than the wide pusher.

Auch sieht man, fast identisch mit der Version 3.

It also looks almost identical to Version 3.

Sogar die Gußnr. ist identisch wie bei der Version 3.

Even the casting number is identical to that of Version 3.

Version 5 mit breitem Drücker und die Spule ist jetzt aus Kunststoff, gefertigt von ca.1977-1978.

Version 5 features a wide trigger, and the spool is now made of plastic, manufactured circa 1977–1978.

Jetzt hat der Spulenkern einen wesentlich grösseren Radius bekommen, wahrscheinlich aus Gründen der Stabilität.

The spool core has now been given a significantly larger radius, likely for reasons of stability.

Diese Spulen Version gab es nur ganz kurze Zeit, die Führung innen, aus Messing war nur so tief gesetzt wie Aussparungen tief waren. Das führte leider dazu, das beim grob motorischen einrasten der Achse, diese Aussparungen schnell ausgeschlagen sind und die Spule starkes Spiel auf der Achse bekommen hat! Aber wie immer, wurde auch das von ABU gelöst!

This version of the spool was available for only a very short time; the internal brass bushing was seated only as deep as the recesses themselves. Unfortunately, this meant that during the somewhat rough engagement of the axle, these recesses quickly became worn out, causing the spool to develop significant play on the axle. But, as always, ABU resolved this issue as well!

Version 5 mit breitem Drücker und die Spule ist jetzt aus Kunststoff, gefertigt von ca.1978-1979. Von vorne ist sie identisch wie die Version 4.

Version 5 features a wide release button, and the spool is now made of plastic, manufactured circa 1978–1979. From the front, it is identical to Version 4.

Auch in der Seitenansicht ist diese Spule mit der Version 4 identisch.

In the side view as well, this spool is identical to Version 4.

Jetzt kann man sehen, der innere Ring aus Messing, sitzt jetzt weiter hinten, die Aussparung für die Achse, wird dadurch wesentlich stabiler und schlägt nicht mehr aus!

As you can see now, the inner brass ring sits further back the recess for the axle is thereby made significantly more stable and will no longer wear loose!

Version 6 mit breitem Drücker und die Spule ist jetzt aus Kunststoff, gefertigt von ca.1979-1981. Von vorne ist sie fast identisch wie die Version 5, allerdings ist jetzt die Schnurkapazität aufgedruckt.

Fazit: Hier sieht man auf jeden Fall, man muss sich eine Spule auf jeden Fall von allen drei Seiten anschauen, um sie der genauen Version zu ordnen zu können!

Conclusion: It is abundantly clear here that you absolutely must examine a coil from all three sides in order to assign it to the exact correct version!
