Leider kommt es immer mal wieder vor, das bei unseren geliebten Cardinal Rollen, die letzte Version, mit dem einseitigen Mitnehmers abfällt. Wie immer gibt es natürlich verschiedene Gründe dafür. Wichtig ist das man auf diese winzige Nietverbindung, nicht zu große Kräfte wirken lässt, vor allen Dingen beim harten Drill oder bei Hängern! Bei extremen Hängern, niemals über die Rolle lösen, sondern immer etwas, wie ein Stock in die Schnur wickeln und daran ziehen, das ist sehr sehr wichtig!

Unfortunately, it happens from time to time that the latest version of the single-sided line pickup on our beloved Cardinal reels falls off. As always, there are various reasons for this. It is important to avoid subjecting that tiny rivet connection to excessive force, especially during a tough fight with a fish or when snagged! In the event of a severe snag, never try to free it using the reel itself, instead, always wrap the line around something like a stick and pull on that, this is crucial!

Sollte es doch mal dazu kommen, das diese Nietverbindung schlapp macht, hier ein paar Tipps! Das gilt nur für Rollen, mit dieser Nietverbindung, die gibt es an allen Modellen, teilweise ab 1975, teilweise wurden sie auch, etwas später eingeführt.

Die entsprechenden Teile ausbauen und reinigen. Sollte die Messingscheibe verloren gegangen sein, oder die innere Bohrung ausgeschlagen sein, lasst euch von einem Feinmechaniker eurer Wahl, einfach ein paar dieser Scheiben drehen. Man kann solche Teile auch selbst in einer Ständerbohrmaschine anfertigen, da sollte man aber die entsprechenden Vorkenntnisse haben! Wichtig ist, das die Bohrung in der Messingscheibe das richtige Maß hat, damit es nach dem vernieten auch hält!

Remove and clean the relevant parts. If the brass washer has been lost or the inner hole has become worn or enlarged, simply have a precision mechanic of your choice turn a few of these washers for you. You can also make such parts yourself using a drill press, though this requires the appropriate expertise! It is crucial that the hole in the brass washer is the correct size to ensure it holds securely after riveting.

Eine neue Messingscheibe wurde vernietet und mit einem Körner schlag zusätzlich gesichert! Jetzt die Teile einfach wieder montieren und entsprechend schmieren!

A new brass washer was riveted in place and additionally secured with a center punch mark! Now simply reassemble the parts and lubricate them accordingly!

Das wichtigste ist das man diese Messingscheibe mindestens ein mal im Jahr, genaustens kontrolliert! Wenn man Glück hat, kann man wie hier das Problem kommen sehen! Die Messingscheibe sitzt nur noch zu 60 bis 70% auf dem Pin! Bei der nächsten grösseren Belastung wird sie abspringen! Hier ist Handlungsbedarf angesagt!

The most important thing is to inspect this brass washer very carefully at least once a year! If you’re lucky, you can spot the problem coming, just like here! The brass washer is currently sitting on the pin with only 60 to 70% coverage! It’s going to pop off the next time it’s subjected to significant stress! Immediate action is required here!

Auch hier kann man deutlich sehen, das der Pin schon etwas zurück gerutscht ist und keinen richtigen halt mehr hat!

Here, too, you can clearly see that the pin has slipped back a bit and no longer holds properly!

So sieht dann der Antrieb, der Achse wieder einsatzfähig aus! Wenn der Pin noch ausreichend übersteht, reicht auch das „normale“ Vernieten, das ist aber leider meistens nicht der Fall!

And that’s what the axle drive looks like once it’s ready for service again! If the pin still protrudes sufficiently, „normal“ riveting is enough, but unfortunately, that is usually not the case!
